چکیده

Internal friction and ultrasonic attenuation peaks associated with diffusionless phase transformations in alloys, such as thermoelastic martensites and others, were reviewed. They were discussed from the stand point of (1) Understanding the mechanism of the phase transformations and (2) Developing new alloy materials of high damping capacity for application to noise and vibration abatement. Phase transformation peaks, a twin-boundary relaxation peak, and a Zener peak were identified in Mn-Cu, Mn-Ni, In-T1, In-Cd, Au-Cd, Ti-Ni, Cu-Al-Ni, Cu-Al-Mn, and Cu-Zn-A1 alloys, respectively.

In-Situ Monitoring of Microstructure during Thermomechanical Simulations using Laser-Ultrasonics

Abstract Ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements are powerful tools to infer information about the microstructure and properties of metals and their alloys. To begin, elastic constants can be measured with precision as high as one part in 10. At this level of precision, changes in elastic constants caused by texture, phase transformations, and various internal friction phenomena can be...

Kinetic Pathways of Phase Transformations in Two-Phase Ti Alloys

Possible phase transformation kinetic pathways from the high temperature b phase to the low temperature (a+ b) two-phase Ti alloys were analyzed using the graphical thermodynamic method and the assumption that diffusionless and displacive transformations take place much faster than phase separation which requires long-range diffusion. It is shown that depending on the composition of a b-stabili...

A Two Variant Thermomechanical Model for Shape Memory Alloys

Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) undergo stress and temperature induced reversible diffusionless crystalline phase transformations between a high synmaetry phase (austenite) stable at high tenlperatures and low stresses, and a low symmetry phase (martensite) stable at low temperatures and high stresses. Unusual macroscopic effects arise from these crystallographic changes, chiefly shape memory and su...

Symmetry and reversibility of martensitic transformations

Martensitic transformations are diffusionless solid-to-solid phase transformations characterized by a rapid change of crystal structure, observed in metals, alloys, ceramics, and proteins. They come in two widely different classes. In steels, the transformation microstructure induced by quenching remains essentially unchanged upon subsequent loading or heating; the transformation is not reversi...

Martensitic transformations and mobility of twin boundaries in Ni2MnGa alloys studied by using internal friction

Internal friction (IF) was measured in two non-stoichiometric Ni2MnGa alloys. Several IF peaks attributed to some restructuring of the martensitic lattice were observed below Ms. From the strain dependence of IF, the activation enthalpy for movement of twin boundaries between martensitic domains was estimated to be equal to 0.02–0.04 eV. 2003 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All ...
